Gem, a Sunseeker 68 Sport Yacht listed with OneWater Yacht Group, has an asking price of $1.55 million.

The 2014 build has a three-stateroom, three-head layout, accommodating up to six guests during extended cruises.

Gem’s owners and their guests can take advantage of the yacht’s four well-equipped entertainment spaces. Guests will instantly notice a cockpit furnished for both sunbathing and casual conversation with a two-person sun pad aft as well as a C-shaped settee and table forward and to starboard. Stairs to port lead to the flybridge.

Gem’s flybridge has a two-seat helm station forward and to port. A lounge pad is to the starboard of the helm station. Abaft the lounge pad is a six-person C-shaped settee and fixed table, creating an ideal setup for shaded alfresco dining with the Bimini top up. Simply close the stairway doors for a more private setting.

The foredeck has a three-person sun pad for catching rays in quietude on the hook or at the quay. Wide side decks with rails means safe transit between this Sunseeker 68 Sport Yacht’s foredeck and the cockpit.

The flybridge yacht’s salon has multiple seating options for guests, including a six-person sofa to starboard abaft the two-person lower helm station. Forward, a four-person sofa and fixed table with two loose chairs are to port, which can be tucked away, that can be added to create a more formal dining area for up to six.

The galley is down and to port, a few steps off the salon, and it’s equipped with a sink, a three-ring ceramic touch-control cooktop and extractor fan, a refrigerator, a freezer and microwave/convection oven.

The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a double berth, en suite head, walk-in closet and enough stowage for extended cruising. The forepeak VIP stateroom also has a double berth and en suite head. The starboard guest stateroom has two single berths and an en suite head.

Twin MTU 8V200CRs provide Gem 2,500 hp and a reported 40-knot top hop, with an economic cruise speed of 24 knots.

Other notable features include a hydraulic bathing platform, a tender garage, a side-power thruster, a 19 kW 50Hz generator with underwater silent exhaust and soundshield, engine compartment soundproofing, a twin berth crew quarters, a chart plotter with GPS, radar, autopilot, speed and depth instrumentation, and a VHF radio with DSC.

It’s also worth noting Gem had its oil change done in July 2023, and also had its hull sandblasted and polished in June 2023 as well as antifouling paint and fresh Propspeed on all running gear.

I was more excited than usual as our crew cruised away from Sunseeker’s site at West Quay Road. I have done this run many times, and it’s invariably a joy, but this time, I was aboard the builder’s Superhawk 55. It’s the first open cruiser the British yard has built in ages, and it’s a return to what made Sunseeker world-famous.

Beyond being home to Sunseeker, Poole Harbour’s claim to fame is being Europe’s largest natural harbor. That morning, it felt like it. We chugged out through the navigation channel traffic, past the majestic Brownsea Castle, and past the sloping lawns and exclusive terraces of Sandbanks, some of the most expensive real estate in England. Finally, we reached the Poole Bar Buoy and open water.

Throttles opened. Worth the wait? Absolutely yes.

The twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950-D11 diesels max out at 2,550 rpm, which, during my runs at about half-load in a gentle breeze and very little swell, gave us a top-end speed of 37 to 38 knots. Sunseeker says the hull form is completely new. It strikes a great balance between planing efficiency and a rewarding driving experience. The Superhawk 55 easily sliced the wave crests we generated, and the yacht heeled satisfyingly into the turns, especially with the wheel hard over. Having the driving position on centerline is a definite bonus.

Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, expect a range of 200 to 225 nautical miles. According to my numbers, this yacht will run all day at 2,000 rpm and around 25 knots.

And the Superhawk 55 will look great doing it, outside and inside. Despite its considerable volume, this yacht still looks long and low, from the swim platform to the bow, probably helped by what appears to be one continuous hullside window to break up the freeboard. Note too how the superstructure sits within the hull rather than on top of it.

The cockpit occupies the full 16-foot-2-inch beam aft. Side decks are accessed via a pair of pantograph doors that flank the helm. Those side decks run forward from just abaft amidships, and they include three shallow steps to reach the foredeck terrace. The 54-square-foot windscreen is an impressive single pane with double curvature. The standard open layout includes just the arch mast, but as of this writing, all but one owner has chosen the hardtop option.

The cockpit layout is intended to be versatile, making the Superhawk 55 a weekender or a party boat. The essentials include a sofa-sun pad and a table with leaves aft. There’s a wet bar abaft the triple-seat raised bridge. A pair of L-shaped sofas can slide back and forth, or in and out, on rails. That means they can be pushed to the sides when more room is needed, or closer together for meals at the table.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55
A new hull form helps get the yacht on plane quickly, creating a confidence-inspiring helm experience. Courtesy Sunseeker International

Another dining spot is belowdecks. The lower deck has an amidships salon with a galley to port and a dinette-sofa to starboard. There are doors to the two en suite staterooms, one each fore and aft. The headroom in the main salon enhances the perception of luxury. While the headroom is better in the forward stateroom than in the aft one, both staterooms are broadly the same in terms of space and views.

As for decor, Sunseeker offers five veneers and a dozen lacquers. The Superhawk 55 I got aboard had what felt like a darker vibe: piano black and stained oak.

No matter the interior styling, this is a relatively quiet boat. While running the yacht flat out, I recorded 73 to 75 decibels at the helm, in the salon with the cockpit hatch open, and in the aft stateroom. Sixty-five decibels, which I recorded in the forward stateroom, is the level of normal conversation.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55
The Superhawk 55’s garage accommodates a 9-foot-2-inch Williams MiniJet 280 tender. Courtesy Sunseeker International

For heading ashore, a garage is aft, big enough to hold a 9-foot-2-inch Williams MiniJet 280 tender. A drawer above the garage could hold underwater scooters or fenders.

The first Sunseeker Superhawk 55 was unveiled at Boot Düsseldorf in January, and Sunseeker expects to deliver 25 to 30 of these performance boats this year alone. Apparently, I’m far from the only yachting enthusiast who has long been waiting for this model.

Hawk History

Sunseeker’s first real “hawk” was the Tomahawk 37. Then, in no particular order, came the Thunderhawk 43, Hawk 27, Mohawk 29, Hawk 31 and Tomahawk 41. Over the years, there also were several Superhawks, namely the 34 (famous for the River Thames chase sequences in the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough”), the 40, the 43, the 48 and the 50 that had surface drives and topped out around 50 knots. There’s also the current 60-plus-knot Hawk 38, which is a dayboat with a center console and outboards. Most of the older Hawks topped out at 40 to 46 knots.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55
The interior layout includes two similar-size staterooms, both offering ocean views. Courtesy Sunseeker International

That’s Not Teak

Sunseeker has virtually stopped using wooden decking. This Superhawk 55 had a light surface made of Sikafloor Marine-595 Antarctica throughout the main deck. The mock white caulking creates striking patterns.

Flag Salute

The Superhawk 55 has Union Jack homages in its transom gates, in the LED framing in the skylight between the salon and windscreen, in the salon’s headliner and in the stitching on the back of the pilot seats. A similar tribute is in the taillights on newer British-built Mini Coopers.

Dayboat performance combined with weekending possibilities? That’s what Sunseeker has achieved with the newest addition to its Performance line. The Superhawk 55 has a reported 38-knot top hop by way of twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950 engines and can sleep four people in two staterooms. The boat made its US debut at the recent Miami International Boat Show, with more than 50 units sold already.

The Superhawk 55’s dayboat functionality is immediately apparent when guests step on board via the 6-by-15-foot swim platform and up two steps into the 188-square-foot cockpit. Here, there is an aft sun pad and two aft-facing settees surrounding an expandable table. This gathering space also has a wet bar forward with a sink, a refrigerator, an ice maker and a grill. Owners can also opt for a 43-inch 4K television with Apple TV and Airplay that can hide away in the wet bar. Beneath the sun pad, there is a garage that can hold a Williams Minijet tender or water toys.

Forward of the wet bar is the centerline three-seat helm station. Whoever’s driving will have two 16-inch Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit multifunction displays and Volvo Penta’s integrated pilot system with an IPS joystick to assist. Pantograph doors on both sides of the helm let the skipper or first mate easily access the side decks.

Access to the galley belowdecks is via stairs to starboard of the helm. The 120-square-foot galley is illuminated by natural light that pours in via hullside windows and segmented windows above. To port, the galley has a refrigerator, a freezer, a ceramic four-ring cooktop, a Miele microwave oven and a dishwasher; to starboard, there is a sofa for guests seeking a reprieve from the elements.

Owners and special guests alike will have roomy accommodations on the Superhawk 55, with a 123-square-foot, full-beam stateroom amidships as well as a 105-square-foot forepeak stateroom. Each stateroom has a 43-inch 4K television with Apple TV and Airplay, and a double berth. The aft stateroom can be ordered with twin berths instead, for families with kids.

In addition to being a suitable dayboat, the Superhawk 55 has liveaboard potential too. The galley belowdecks has a fridge, a freezer, a cooktop with four burners, a Miele microwave oven and a dishwasher. Courtesy Sunseeker International

The Superhawk 55 is for multifaceted owners. It’s a thrill-seeker that can serve as an adventure vessel for the day and be back in time for dinner, or it can be an effective cruiser for longer family voyages.

Sunseeker Predator 65 Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/sunseeker-predator-65-reviewed/ Fri, 23 Dec 2022 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=59440 The Sunseeker Predator 65 evolved from the 65 Sport Yacht, removing the upper deck and adding a carbon-fiber-and-glass sunroof.

The post Sunseeker Predator 65 Reviewed appeared first on Yachting.

]]>
Sunseeker Predator 65
Even in an aerial view, the 35-knot Sunseeker Predator 65 cuts a sporty line. Courtesy Sunseeker International

The Sunseeker Predator 65 is a 35-knot bundle of fun.

Based on the same hull as its sistership, the 65 Sport Yacht, the Predator 65 has an even purer profile. It eliminates features such as the 65 Sport Yacht’s upper deck, extra stairs, and sports-fly setup with a low-slung driving position, and instead offers a sliding carbon-fiber-and-glass sunroof—which means a proper open-yacht vibe on the main deck. There’s also a foredeck terrace and various cockpit furniture choices, along with a swim platform that can combine with the garage to create a beach club. Suffice it to say, during the day, the outdoors is awesome.

The standard cockpit setup includes a conventional transom sofa and a pair of bar stools to port. The stools help transform the aft-galley countertop into a bar, thanks to a drop-down electric window. Alternatively, an L-shaped sofa and bigger table to port can make the cockpit an even comfier alfresco hangout.

In addition to the galley aft, the salon has an amidships lounge and a two-seat helm offset to starboard. Amidships, flanked by full-height picture windows, the standard lounge area combines a booth sofa and an extendable table to port, and a two-seat sofa to starboard. An alternative layout loses the galley up so the lounge sofas to port can stretch all the way to the deck doors aft.

Sunseeker Predator 65
The master stateroom has ocean views via the hullside windows, along with a king-size berth. Courtesy Sunseeker International

Sunseeker’s interiors have the sort of refinement found in high-quality cars, and that’s rare aboard boats. Take the bridge area, which is beautifully detailed and ergonomically clever. All the usual information is neatly presented on two Garmin touchscreen multifunction displays configured with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit software, but I couldn’t take my eyes off a pair of small, round digital displays beneath them, providing essential driver information. Skippers choose what these round displays show by twisting a knob; speed, fuel state and rudder angle are what I wanted to see.

Belowdecks, the accommodations include a standard three or optional four staterooms, plus a day head. The owners’ space is amidships aft, with a forward-facing king berth, a vanity to starboard, a chaise lounge or breakfast booth for two to port, and a shower room to starboard. The VIP stateroom is in the bow, and a twin-berth en suite guest stateroom is to starboard.

There are four options for the amidships area to port, which is effectively the area outside the owners’ stateroom door. A utility area is standard. The Predator 65 that I got aboard, which was headed for the US East Coast, had this layout, with plenty of linen stowage and space for the washer-dryer. Another option is for this space to become a galley down or a section of an enlarged owners’ stateroom with a study. Or it can be turned into a mini salon or fourth stateroom, albeit with room for just a single bunk.

Sunseeker Predator 65
The Predator 65’s hull form grips the sea and helps provide agile handling for helmsmen. Courtesy Sunseeker International

For power, owners can choose from twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1200s or 1,000 hp D13-IPS1350s. All 65 Sport Yacht and Predator 65 orders to date have included the larger powerplants.

Sunseeker’s Predator boats have enviable handling reputations, and this one doesn’t disappoint. There was a serious breeze for our English Channel jaunt on board, which meant we had to pick our moments for pushing the throttles to their stops. Flat out at just over 2,400 rpm, the Predator 65 hit about 35 knots every time. This was running the yacht at around half-load and with an empty garage.

The eco-cruise range, in theory, could be as high as 1,100 nautical miles at 7.5 knots or 580 nautical miles at 10 knots. But given the need for speed of most Predator 65 buyers, 325 nautical miles at 23 knots is the more interesting calculation.

Personally, I prefer the Predator 65 to the 65 Sport Yacht. As good as the SkyHelm is on the 65 Sport Yacht—and it is very good—I never spend much time in the upstairs driver’s seat. Whereas, with a Predator 65, the roof would only ever close with the setting of the sun.

Space to Spare

The Predator 65’s tender garage is supposedly 1.5 times wider than the Predator 74’s. It can house a 12-foot jet tender as well as several smaller toys. Fully decked out, it can help transform the stern into a beach club.

Inside Matters

Various light-dark schemes are available for the Predator 65. The boat I got aboard had the most popular combination: a dark, satin-sheen smoked eucalyptus with silver-oak soles. Other veneer choices include earth-gray oak, American black walnut and wenge, all in satin or high-gloss finishes.

Class Glass

The Predator 65’s double-curved, laminated windscreen is reportedly one of the biggest single panes of glass ever installed aboard a Sunseeker model.
