Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

The market for brokerage yachts becomes a loudly buzzing hive of activity around the autumn boat-show season, with brokers making big sales pushes before, during and after the shows. This year, the good news for brokerage buyers is that quite a few respected brands of yachts are available, with styling and performance capabilities that can suit all different types of cruising plans.

Here’s a look at a few of the yachts for sale on the brokerage market right now, along with the features that make each of the yachts worth a look.

Article At-A-Glance

  • It’s a busy time of year for brokerage-yacht listings, just after the autumn boat shows.

  • Current listings for brokerage yachts can satisfy many types of cruising itineraries.

The Need for Speed

Some of the yachts available on the brokerage market right now are from builders that place a premium on the ability to cruise faster than competing yachts of similar length. These yachts will get their owners from Point A to Point B in a shorter amount of time than many other yachts, leaving more hours in the day to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Sunseeker 95 S-Cape

The Sunseeker 95 S-Cape is a 2017 build with a top speed of 26 knots and a cruising speed of 22 knots, according to sales broker Mark Elliott at IYC. He describes the yacht as being “in immaculate, turnkey condition” at an asking price of $5,499,000.

Accommodations are for 10 guests in five staterooms, including a split-level, full-beam master on the main deck. Guest spaces for relaxation are indoors and outdoors, including outdoor dining options. Elliott says S-Cape is also charter-ready for an owner who wants to offset some ownership costs with charter income.

Mangusta 109 Dopamine

The name Dopamine says it all about this Mangusta 109, which is for sale through broker Alex G. Clarke at Denison Yachting. Top speed is 26 knots with a cruising speed of 21 knots, and with the Volvo Penta engines showing just over 1,000 original hours (the IPS is still under extended warranty on the 2021 build).

Ten guests are accommodated in five staterooms, including an on-deck master. There’s a hot tub on the bow with a lounge area, making this yacht a good option for buyers who want privacy while moored stern-to at the marina. The asking price is $13,250,000 for this yacht, which also has a sizable tender garage for a RIB and toys.

Go-Anywhere Ability

Several of the yachts on the brokerage market right now fall into the explorer category, which means they’re built with features and systems that allow them to cruise farther for longer periods of time away from the dock.

Buyers who have an interest in exploring remote destinations, as opposed to hanging out closer to shore, might want to consider these listings.

Vitters Dardanella

The 121-foot Vitters Dardanella is listed for sale with Y.CO at an asking price of about $9.47 million. The Dutch firm Vripack designed this yacht, whose reported range is 5,400 nautical miles at 9 knots.

Dardanella isn’t like other explorer yachts on the market today,” says Y.CO sales broker Max Bulley. “The vessel was built to explore and was not converted from another life.”

Dardanella was built in 1996 and was most recently refitted in 2018. Accommodations are for 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master. The yacht is also available for charter through Y.CO at a weekly base rate of $125,000 in Costa Rica.

Lürssen Ice

The 295-foot Lürssen Ice is for sale through broker Gregory Gheraia at Blackorange Superyachts. Built in 2005, Ice has a reported range of 6,000 nautical miles for world cruising.

Asking price is about $103.5 million for Ice, which underwent what Gheraia calls “a massive refit” from 2019 to 2021. Exteriors are by Tim Heywood with interiors by Terence Disdale. Features include an elevator that services all decks, accommodations for 14 guests in seven staterooms, diesel-electric Azipod propulsion, Quantum Zero-Speed stabilizers and an aft-deck swimming pool.

Classic Styling

Buyers have quite a few options on the brokerage market today for yachts with traditional lines that never go out of style. These classically styled vessels come in various lengths with an array of features, and are often used for cruising with friends or family.

Here’s a look at two of the classically styled options for sale on the brokerage market today.

New England Boat Works Sea Bold

The 96-foot Sea Bold is a custom, fast-expedition yacht with a C. Raymond Hunt hull and construction by New England Boatworks. Delivered in 2003 and refitted in 2019-20, Sea Bold has an asking price of $2,999,000 through 26 North Yachts.

The build was done with Kevlar and carbon fiber epoxy for a lightweight, strong hull that can achieve a high-speed cruise of 22 knots. The top-end is reportedly 25 knots on Sea Bold, which retains a New England-style profile.

Features include a fully enclosed, air-conditioned pilothouse, stabilizers and a bow thruster for easier, more comfortable maneuvering on long-distance runs and in close quarters at the dock.

Hargrave Renaissance

The 116-foot Hargrave Renaissance is a 2016 build that’s offered through Hargrave Custom Yachts at an asking price of $8.75 million. This is a raised-pilothouse design with a hull by Jack Sarin and décor from Yacht Interiors by Shelley.

Accommodations are for 10 guests in five staterooms, including an on-deck master. Cruise speed is 18 knots with a top hop of 22 knots, according to the Hargrave team. The power package is Caterpillar C32 engines, with each one showing about 3,500 hours. At-rest and underway stabilizers are installed for guest comfort at sea.

The NFL’s Favorite Boats https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/nfl-favorite-yachts/ Tue, 12 Sep 2023 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=60905 While some NFL players may own a midsize motoryacht, it’s the teams’ owners who lay claim to the biggest megayachts around.

The post The NFL’s Favorite Boats appeared first on Yachting.

]]>
Plenty has been written about retired (really, this time) NFL quarterback Tom Brady’s passion for boating. He reportedly owned a Wajer 55S before upgrading to a Wajer 77, a sweet reward after earning what’s estimated to be a net worth of at least $300 million.

But when it comes to the really big boats—the megayachts, superyachts and gigayachts—it’s the NFL team owners who have the goods. Sure, there’s an occasional story in the news about an NFL player spending a day on the water, but the people making a real splash on the docks are the ones who own the teams.

Article At-A-Glance

  • NFL players, such as Tom Brady, have good-size boats, but team owners have big yachts.
  • Several NFL team owners have sizable, pedigree European shipyard builds.
  • You’d never know the owners based on the yacht names.
  • The yachts cruise all over the world, including the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

European Shipyards that NFL Owners Choose

Europe has always been seen as the place to buy a pedigree superyacht, and owners of NFL teams naturally gravitate toward the best. They’ve commissioned yachts from Oceanco, Lürssen, Feadship and Royal Hakvoort.

Jerry Jones’ Bravo Eugenia

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones owns Bravo Eugenia, a 357-foot Oceanco that was delivered in late 2018. Forbes reported that, during the pandemic, Jones handled the NFL draft from on board—in a luxurious version of social-distancing. The yacht itself is noteworthy for its hybrid propulsion as well as its multiple helipads, which give Jones the ability to land on board pretty much anywhere in the world.

Shahid Khan’s Kismet

In 2014, Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan took delivery of the 312-foot Lürssen Kismet. It’s currently listed for sale on the Moran Yacht & Ship website at an asking price of about $160 million, with what the brokerage house calls a “decadent interior” by Reymond Langton Design. Accommodations are for 16 guests, with quarters for 28 crew. The yacht has a helipad, a spa, a swimming pool and an outdoor fireplace—a rare find aboard any yacht of any size.

American Shipyards that NFL Owners Choose

Some NFL owners skip the European shipyards (and their years-long waiting lists) altogether and go with American builds instead. These yachts are new or refitted after being purchased from previous owners, showing that it’s possible to get exactly what you want in a yacht even if you don’t choose the process of custom construction.

Steve Bisciotti’s Winning Drive

Baltimore Ravens majority owner Steve Bisciotti reportedly also owns Winning Drive, a Westport 130 that left the yard in 2012. This is one of the most popular American-model yachts ever, with the series in build since way back in 2000 and the company still offering new versions today. The 10-guest, seven-crew Westport 130 is also a popular model on the charter market, if anyone wants to book a different hull to get a feel for life on board Bisciotti style.

Stan Kroenke’s Aquila

This billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Rams (and numerous other sports teams) reportedly also owns Aquila, a 280-foot Derecktor that started life on the water in 2010 as Cakewalk—the largest private motoryacht ever built in the United States. The yacht underwent a yearlong refit at Pendennis and is currently available for charter through Burgess at a lowest weekly base rate of $945,000. Guests have full access to the onboard elevator, cinema room, spa and massage areas, and bridge-deck fire pit.

Tom Brady’s Boat

By comparison with these behemoths, Brady’s Wajer 77 seems small—but it’s actually the largest model in the builder’s line. It’s built for speed and silence, with a top speed of 37 knots and extensive use of insulation to dampen onboard noise. Smaller models from Wajer give all kinds of boat owners a chance to sample the kind of fun that Brady is having out on the water.

Wajer 38

The Wajer 38 is the entry-level model in the builder’s lineup, with 45 knots of speed (yes, it can outrun Tom Brady’s boat). The 300-nautical-mile range means this boat is well-suited for weekend getaways, and the fact that the boat is packed with seating and sun pads mean owners can bring plenty of friends along for the ride. Vripack in the Netherlands—also a superyacht designer—handled naval architecture, which explains the upscale feel.

Wajer 38

Wajer 55S

This is the model that Tom Brady had before he upgraded to the builder’s larger flagship. The 55S is still in production today. It’s a 38-knot boat with a 400-nautical-mile range and a center-console design that allows great walkaround space for fishing and other water sports. Belowdecks, there’s accommodations for as many as four people, if owners want to spend the night on the hook. For the hull, owners can choose among a wide variety of colors, ranging from more subtle blacks and whites to high-octane yellows and pinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do more NFL team owners than NFL players own superyachts?

Generally speaking, superyacht owners are billionaires, while even the most successful NFL players tend to be multimillionaires.

Do any NFL team owners have yachts bigger than a football field?

A football field between the goal lines is 100 yards, or 300 feet. That means several NFL team owners have yachts that would be too long to fit inside their own stadiums.

Do NFL team owners keep their yachts near NFL stadiums?

Not usually. Dallas Cowboys owners Jerry Jones’ yacht, for instance, has been spotted everywhere from Vancouver to London.

Do NFL team owners with yachts also have other business interests?

Yes. Shahid Khan, who owns the Jacksonville Jaguars, made his fortune with Flex-N-Gate, which makes bumpers for vehicles. Steve Bisciotti, who owns the Baltimore Ravens, also owns staffing, recruiting and talent-management companies.

Do any NFL stadiums have dockage for yachts?

Not directly at the stadium, but there’s a marina adjacent to Soldier Field, where the Chicago Bears play, and boaters heading to Cleveland Browns games can tie up at the nearby Rock and Dock Marina at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Antarctica, as a charter location, is a catch-as-catch-can kind of place. A handful of charter yachts head there each year, some better outfitted for the environment than others.

A true explorer yacht for charter in Antarctica is special news, and that’s exactly what the 413-foot Lürssen Octopus is. Built in 2003 for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Octopus is a global explorer with an Ice Class steel hull. Allen used the yacht for ocean research until his death in 2018.

Last year, Octopus joined the charter fleet for the first time, through Camper & Nicholsons International. The charter dates in Antarctica—with weekly base rates starting at $2.2 million for 12 guests—are part of a two-year world itinerary that Octopus began in January. The journey is expected to see the yacht in Costa Rica, Panama and South America this year, with the Antarctica visit starting in early December.

Charter guests will add their experiences to countless others that have happened on this yacht, which has, among other things, had a recording studio aboard for Mick Jagger, Usher and U2.

Lürssen Octopus
Octopus has an underwater observation lounge with a glass bottom where charter guests can watch whatever marine life and geography happen to be underneath the yacht. Courtesy Camper & Nicholsons International

Guests will have access to seven tenders, helipads, a gym, a spa, a 15-person cinema, a library, a medical suite and a dive center with a hyperbaric chamber. They also can view one-of-a-kind art, including a signed photo of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins near the American flag that Frank Borman and Jim Lovell carried aboard the Gemini VII spacecraft in 1965.

It’s hard to imagine a charter yacht with a better spirit of adventure, not to mention the outfitting for incredible experiences in a remote destination like Antarctica.

What to Do

An Antarctica charter itinerary can start at King George Island. From there, Octopus can head into the remote wilderness with views of icebergs and penguins along the way. In the Gerlache Strait, humpback whales are a common sighting. Next, guests can head ashore from Orne Harbour for a hike with an overlook that takes in the whole bay. At Port Lockroy, there is a post office where guests can send postcards home. The Lemaire Channel is home to various kinds of seals. Here, the crew can launch a tender to cruise through the ice, as close as 12 feet to the wildlife. At Cuverville Island, the gentoo penguins await, followed by Enterprise Island and its resident fur seals. At Deception Island, it’s possible to cruise into the crater of a live volcano.

The engine wouldn’t start. All of us charter guests had arrived in Antigua, unpacked in our staterooms, changed into our bathing suits, and amassed on the aft deck for a briefing with the captain about the beach-filled Caribbean charter itinerary ahead. Alas, he informed us, we wouldn’t be going anywhere. The engine room was not cooperating, and the needed parts for repairs wouldn’t arrive for days.

This was my first experience in learning to think about the yacht itself as a destination. For the better part of a week, that captain and crew arranged for fun shore-based expeditions at beaches and more; onboard meals including pizza-making and sushi extravaganzas that were equal parts entertainment and sustenance; and cocktail parties with steel-drum bands and dancers on deck. It didn’t matter that the boat never moved from the dock. A great charter experience was had by all.

That week in Antigua happened years ago, but it has been on my mind since the end of this past December, when the omicron variant became the world’s new nemesis. Charter clients finally re-booking itineraries in their favorite destinations for the coming summer once again faced the prospects of shifting travel restrictions mucking up the plan.

It sure feels like now is a good time to embrace the bright side: The way charter yachts are outfitted nowadays, they offer a getaway pretty much anywhere. It doesn’t matter so much whether guests step aboard in the Bahamas or French Riviera. Getting away from civilization—by way of a yacht that’s fun unto itself—is a vacation.

295-foot Lürssen spa

Today’s charter yachts have everything from onboard cinemas to spas. Some have a theme-park-level dedication to the latest water toys. They have chefs whose creations rival the offerings at Michelin-starred restaurants and a crew whose tablescaping skills can make dining tables feel like brand-new settings at every meal.

Today’s charter yachts bring the fun and relaxation with them, no matter where guests are able to get aboard. And that’s a welcome ray of sunshine no matter where the anchor drops next.

Options Abound

Aboard the 147-foot Intermarine M3, guests have access to a 35-foot everglades tender for sport fishing, snorkeling and more. The 101-foot Hargrave Cynderella has a water-toy stash that includes Hobie Mirage Eclipse paddleboards and a Lift eFoil electric scooter. The 172-foot Palmer Johnson DB9 has an open-air cinema on the sun deck. The 148-foot Nicolini Curiosity has an onboard sushi bar on the upper deck, along with a hot tub and gym.

Choices, Choices

The 197-foot Alia Samurai has a portuguese bridge for sundowner cocktails. From aboard the 254-foot explorer yacht Legend, charter guests can explore underwater with a submersible or go air-bound with the yacht’s helicopter operations. The 134-foot Benetti Northern Escape has an onboard infinity pool overlooking the water. The 126-foot Ferretti Custom Line Never Blue has a salon with sole-to-ceiling windows for a glass-lounge ambience.

The World’s Largest Yachts

We humans have long been fascinated by big, bold things.

Way back in 70 AD, for example, the Romans started building the Colosseum. Still standing today, it measures 510 feet wide. Over in France, meanwhile, the Eiffel Tower opened in 1889, at a height of about 984 feet (not counting antennas). No wonder, then, that humanity’s attention soon turned toward making other big, bold things: Big planes, big trains, and yes, big boats. In fact, in terms of boats, they, like buildings, just kept getting bigger. “Boats” became “yachts,” then “megayachts.” Now we hear “megayacht,” “superyacht,” and even “gigayacht” to refer to the biggest yachts in the world.

Since each of those words is a modern term, you might assume that the 20 yachts included here are modern marvels, too. It’s interesting to note that more than half of them launched within this decade. Equally interesting, among those, two are about a year or less old. One of the two is close to delivery, in fact.

However, not all of the yachts on this list are contemporary craft. You’ll surely be surprised to learn that one particular yacht launched in (believe it or not) 1865.

These are some of the fascinating facts to keep in mind as you read through the 20 biggest yachts in the world. For starters, add the lengths of the first two yachts, and you’ll find they exceed the height of the Eiffel Tower. They do so with plenty of room to spare: by 147 feet.

In addition, the fifth-largest yacht contains 683 miles (yes, miles) of cabling. And, while one of the yachts may have masts (three of the largest masts ever manufactured, at that), she’s not technically a sailing yacht.

Hats off to these big, bold things and especially the people who dreamed of them, engineered them, and keep them floating on the world’s oceans.

Measuring just shy of 593 feet, Azzam is impressive for more than just her length. In fact, she’s capable of speeds exceeding 30 knots. She’s also one of several yachts on this list from Lürssen.

While another super-size superyacht held the same name from the late 1980s through the early 2000s, this Fulk Al Salamah was delivered in 2006, by Italy’s Mariotti Yachts. She serves as a shadow boat to another superyacht (see #6). Strong secrecy surrounds her.

Abundant rumors swirl around Eclipse. A popular one is that she has anti-paparazzi lasers, rendering photography equipment useless. What’s true, however, is that this 533-footer has a private owner’s deck and volume exceeding 13,500 gross tons.

The ruler of Dubai owns this yacht, keeping her in home waters. He didn’t commission her, though. He acquired her after construction (jointly by Blohm+Voss and Lürssen, with completion later in the United Arab Emirates) stopped for Brunei royalty.

If guests aboard Dilbar don’t want to swim in the ocean, they can use her indoor pool. Said to be the largest aboard a yacht, it contains 47,551 gallons of water. The 512-footer also has a total of 107,639 square feet of faired and painted surfaces.

Kept in Oman, Al Said belongs to the Sultan of Oman, and has since delivery in 2008. That makes her the second yacht on this list under his ownership (see #2).

topaz yacht

She bears Tim Heywood’s literal signature, too, akin to a nameboard. Courtesy Julien Hubert

Currently in Germany for service work, this six-year-old has more than just the styling signature of designer Tim Heywood. Topaz measures 483 feet long and has remained confidential since delivery from (you guessed it) Lürssen.

Imagine reactions back in 1984, when Prince Abdulaziz was completed in Denmark. (The builder was a commercial yard, Helsingør Vaerft.) She’s belonged to Saudi royalty ever since. The late King Fahd was her original owner, who named her for one of his sons.

El Mahrousa

Egypt’s presidential yacht holds the distinction of being the oldest yacht on this list, at 153 years and counting. Used for military training drills for a period, she entertains international heads of state these days.

Despite her name, this 468’5” yacht, built by Nobiskrug, is actually sail-assisted. Therefore, she runs on engines primarily. Still, she’s an engineering feat in sailing. The main mast is more than 328 feet high.

During construction at ADM Shipyards, this nearly 463-footer was code named Swift 141, the latter being her LOA in meters. Completed in 2011, she’s built upon the hull of a naval frigate dating to 1978.

Al Salamah had one of the best code names ever during construction: Mipos, for “Mission Possible.” It’s because the Saudi owner of the 457-footer wanted delivery from Lürssen within two years’ time.

rising sun

Commissioned by American billionaire Larry Ellison and currently belonging to fellow American businessman David Geffen, Rising Sun is 454 feet long. Among the last designs by the late Jon Bannenberg, she entertains Geffen’s Hollywood clients and friends.

shu yacht

Bearing a beam of 67 feet, Shu should see delivery from Lürssen quite soon. Only a few facts are public, such as her interior design being from Mark Berryman, who used a neutral color palette.

Known as Project Thunder during construction, Crescent is just shy of 443 feet. A striking feature is the multi-deck atrium, fitted with floor-to-ceiling glass. You can’t miss it in her profile.

Serene‘s original owner, who took delivery in 2011, requested she feature a snow room—with real snowfall. The famous Paradise Papers investigative report revealed that the 439-foot yacht sold in 2015 for $456 million.

Octopus remained in the hands of her original owner, American entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul Allen, from delivery by Lürssen in 2003 until he died in October. Allen threw parties aboard during the Cannes Film Festival, plus had Octopus assist in key scientific and historic expeditions.

Last but certainly not least in any sense of the word, Maryah measures 410 feet. She is a converted research vessel, which underwent a five-year transformation in Greece to become a private cruiser.

Lürssen Yachts in Germany has launched Project Fiji, a 311-foot superyacht scheduled for delivery in 2019.

The contract to build Project Fiji was signed at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Moran Yacht & Ship represented the client and is supervising the build.

Project Fiji’s designer is Harrison Eidsgaard in London. The yacht’s 46-foot beam is expected to create substantial volume in the interior guest spaces.

Interior décor is by Laura Sessa, who calls it “contemporary modern.”

What we know about Project Fiji: As with so many superyachts, details are slim, but the yacht is expected to have a water-level beach club with spa and terrace, as well as something Lürssen calls a “walkable skylight” on the upper deck aft, along with a fireplace. The bow will have a helipad.
