Sea Ray has launched two new models in its SDX series of surf, sterndrive and outboard boats. The SDX 270 and SDX 270 Surf come in sterndrive and surf configurations, with features and amenities intended to support all-day entertaining and watersports for the whole family.

“The SDX 270 and SDX 270 Surf are the latest boats in our lineup to receive a keel-up redesign, and the first SDX models crafted with our next-generation design language,” Keith Yunger, Sea Ray’s president, stated in a press release. “Also, the SDX 270 Surf is the first surf addition to our SDX Series.”

Designers updated the seating on the SDX 270, which has flexible configurations. In the cockpit, there’s an L-shaped bench, an integrated cooler compartment for drinks and snacks, and USB outlets. Options in this part of the boat include a table and inductive charging stations. For fans of board sports, there’s a board-sized stowage compartment under the bench seat. Above the cockpit is an electric folding watersports tower (standard on the surf variation and optional on the sterndrive model) to provide protection from the elements. It has elevated tow points for wakesurfing or wakeboarding, and it can be lowered or raised for storage. It also can be ordered with optional tower speakers and board racks.

Up at the bow, there’s lounge-style seating, a bow ladder and another integrated cooler compartment for drinks and snacks. Owners who go with Sea Ray’s Comfort Bundle will also have a table and a filler cushion that converts into a sun pad. The bow can further be upgraded with a manual sunshade. A windlass is available with Sea Ray’s Anchor Bundle.

Another convertible sun pad is at the transom. Its backrest folds down to extend the area, with optional Fusion stereo controls close by. The swim platform has a concealable ladder and manual submersible step that’s optional on the sterndrive variation and standard on the surf boat. The transom also has a ski tow eye attachment to connect watersports riders, and an in-sole compartment with drainage for stowing wet gear and lines.

The SDX 270 models also have a starboard compartment to stow life jackets, towels and the like. Sea Ray’s optional Water System Bundle adds a head with a sink and countertop. There is also an option to transform the compartment with cushions, making it a hangout area for kids. A portside cubby provides more stowage.

At the helm are Simrad’s NSX touchscreen display (two of them on the surf variation) and Mercury Marine SmartCraft Connect engine monitoring.

Let’s talk power packages: Standard engines on the SDX 270 are 300-horsepower Mercury MerCruiser 6.2Ls. The SDX 270 Surf has standard 350-horspoewer MerCruiser 6.2Ls.

According to the builder, the Sundancer 370 blends the styling and amenities of a cruiser, a bowrider and a coupe for day trips or weekend cruises.

Sea Ray just launched its SLX 260 and SLX 260 Outboard, the company’s first boat designed by an all-women design team.

“This launch not only sets a new benchmark for design but further celebrates the advantages that a diverse workforce brings to the marine industry,” Aine Denari, Brunswick Boat Group president, stated in a press release.

The design team was led by Sea Ray Senior Design Manager Carrie Fodor and Brunswick Boat Group Senior Industrial Designer Kristin McGinnis. Fodor grew up boating on the Great Lakes and has been with the company since 2008. McGinnis earned a design degree and did an internship with Brunswick Boat Group brands Sea Ray and Boston Whaler before being hired in 2016.

“This SLX 260 project has been a long time in the making, and I’m so excited to finally be able to share this new boat with the world,” Fodor stated in the release. “For any woman or minority that didn’t realize a career in the marine industry or the ability to design a boat was an option, this is proof that you can do something great.”

What kind of power does the SLX 260 have? The outboard version comes with a 300-horsepower Mercury Verado. The sterndrive version has a 300-horsepower MerCruiser 6.2L MPI ECT Bravo Three with DTS.

Boatbuilders Embrace Mercury’s New Outboards https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/story/gear/boatbuilders-embrace-600hp-verado/ Fri, 16 Jul 2021 20:33:14 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=53451 Tiara Yachts and other boatbuilders are using Mercury Marine’s new 600 hp Verado outboards.

Scott Smith, the marketing manager at Formula Boats, was among the first to get a taste of the on-water action. Back in February, as Mercury Marine was preparing to unveil its new 600 hp Verado outboard engine, Smith had a chance to get aboard the prototype Formula 500 Super Sport Crossover shown here with four of the outboards installed.

“This is a wild package, with a steerable lower gear case and a two-speed transmission, a product that is the result of a clean-slate, ground-up design,” he said at the time. “Let me tell you, this power package is strong and smooth and quiet and unique.”

Since then, accolades have only grown louder for the new outboards, which other builders are embracing as well. Tiara Yachts, for instance, chose the 600 hp Mercury Verados as the power package for its new 48 Luxury Sport—the largest outboard-powered model the company has ever built. As you can see in the photo below, the 48 rides with triple Verados. They are integrated into Tiara’s electronics package, which includes Garmin marine navigation.

Tiara 48 LS

“Product launches are always an exciting time for our company, but this one is further elevated with the announcement of the Verado V-12s,” Tiara CEO and president Tom Slikkers said in a press release. “We’re proud to have partnered closely with Mercury and be one of the first manufacturers debuting this new propulsion package, fully integrating these engines into the 48 LS.”

The team at Tiara says the triple Verados get their 48 LS up to 50.3 knots while burning a little more than 157 gallons of fuel per hour. The performance sweet spot in the builder’s test was between 33.2 and 37.4 knots, where fuel burn was 61.8 to 79.2 gph. At those cruising speeds, decibel readings were reportedly between 77 and 86—which is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner or everyday street traffic.

The engines’ ability to provide those kinds of performance numbers also led Viking Yachts to offer the 600 hp Verados on the flagship of its Valhalla line, the V-46. Triple and quad configurations are available. The center-console was repeatedly able to hit 65 knots with the engines, according to Viking, and accelerated from zero to 17 knots in less than five seconds.

“We’re extremely excited,” Viking president and CEO Pat Healey said in a press release. “This is truly an incredible engine, with groundbreaking performance and the kind of innovation we’ve come to expect from Mercury.”

Sea Ray has also added the 600 hp Verados as an option on the SLX 400 Outboard starting with model year 2022, citing the engine’s power, handling and “whisper-quiet operation.” And, as this issue of Yachting went to press, Technohull in Greece was reportedly offering the Verados as an option on its flagship Omega 47 superyacht tender.

The president of Mercury Marine says the powerplants were designed for increasingly large dayboats, which continue to be introduced in increasing numbers. If this initial industrywide embrace of the 600 hp Verados is any indication, the engine-maker is giving a lot of builders and buyers exactly what they want.

Sea Ray is putting final touches on its Sundancer 320 Coupe Outboard, which is scheduled to make her premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The Sundancer 320 Coupe Outboard is an evolution of the Sundancer 320. It has a hardtop, a full windshield and side vent windows; a retracting canvas sunroof is an option.

“The Sundancer 320 Coupe Outboard illustrates the most recent enhancements and evolution of the Sundancer line,” Steve Langlais, Sea Ray’s president, stated in a press release. “We first introduced the Sundancer 320 in 2017. Today, our vision for the model continues to expand to blend the values of a cruiser and a bowrider, and now a coupe.”

Twin Mercury 350 Verado outboards are the standard power package. They come with Mercury’s Joystick Piloting at the helm. Also standard is a wet bar in the cockpit with an optional refrigerator and grill; a cabin with overnight accommodations for four people; and a head.

What electronics are at the helm? Dual displays with Mercury VesselView data, Simrad GO9 9-inch touchscreen displays, and Sea Ray Connect smart boat monitoring powered by Nautic-On.

One of the hallmarks of Sea Ray’s 450 Sundancer was a media room abaft the salon, a space created thanks to compact Cummins Zeus pod-drive power.

There was an a Ultraleather settee, which converted to a berth, and a 37-inch flat-screen TV, gaming port and two ottomans.

A Shoji-style pocket door separated the salon from the forepeak owner’s stateroom. That berth had an extension that could retract electrically to increase floor space when desired.

At press time, we found 10 Sea Ray 450 Sundancers for sale ranging from $399,000 to $512,928.

From the Archive

“The Zeus joystick makes maneuvering a cinch, and the electronic MerCruiser DTS shifters and throttles were easy to operate. Power steering makes the 450 handle like a sports car, and with optional twin 364 hp QSB-380 diesels, we topped out at about 32 knots, although this was the prototype hull, and the engineering boffins were still tinkering with props. Notable was the 31 gph consumption at a fast cruise of 27 knots.” — Yachting, September 2009
