Wellington Yacht Partners currently has the Hunter Scott Duffy 38, Deceiver, listed with an asking price of $340,000. The 1998 Downeast flybridge cruiser starts with an Atlantic Boat Company Duffy hull, which was finished by Hunter Scott, who stopped building in 2005. The yacht has a single stateroom and head. The yacht recently got upgraded Raymarine electronics and a new Simrad autopilot.

Furniture is thoughtfully arranged to help create a sense of space and volume, helped in part by natural light via the salon windows. Owners and their guests will find seating with loose lounge chairs to port and an L-shaped settee and folding table abaft the standing helm to starboard.

Heading aft through the salon door brings lead to an open cockpit with room to add loose furniture for sundowners with friend, take in the sun or perhaps put the five rod holders lining the transom to use catching dinner during that summer cruise with the family. The cockpit is also equipped with stowage lockers and an insulated cooler with a built-in drain.

A ladder to port leads to the flybridge where a two-seat helm station sits abaft a forward-facing bench seat, perfect for taking in beautiful sunsets or enjoying the breeze as the captain navigates to the next waypoint.

Belowdecks, the galley is positioned to port, although an open concept makes it almost feel like part of the salon. A U-shaped countertop provides plenty of space for fixing meals. The galley is also equipped with a two-burner electric cooktop, a microwave, a sink, a mini-refrigerator and plenty of cabinet stowage.

To starboard is the single head, which is full-size head with a separate shower from the toilet and sink. Portholes and roof hatches along with the well-placed lighting on board keep belowdecks well lit. The single stateroom is in the forepeak with two double berths and hanging lockers.

Power for this Hunter Scott Duffy 38 is twin 420 hp Caterpillar 3126 diesels, which, according to the Atlantic Boat Company, produces cruise speeds in the 18- to 20-knot range. The Caterpillar diesels have just 525 hours on them.

Where is Deceiver located? The yacht is currently located in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Wait. Doesn’t Duffy build electric boats? Yes, the California-based boatbuilder does. In fact, during the past four decades, Duffy has built more than 10,000 of them. But founder Marshall “Duffy” Duffield had a dream to create an efficient, quiet and stout single-diesel cruiser with traditional motor-yacht lines and a semidisplacement hull form.

Say hello to Duffy’s vision: the Duffield 58 Flybridge.

Visit the builder’s website, and with one look at his Hunt-designed, 56-foot wooden trawler Following Sea, you’ll see the inspiration for the 58, a modern take on the 1965 motoryacht.

To help bring his idea to life, Duffy partnered with naval architect Doug Zurn, who has penned powerboats for everyone from Marlow to MJM to Billy Joel. Duffy and Zurn came up with a list of must-have features. The 58 had to have one-level living. Check. It also had to cruise at 17 knots on one motor. Check. And the yacht had to be owner-operator friendly for a cruising couple. Check.

Another requirement included using half the fuel of similar-size and -class vessels. We haven’t run the boat yet, but the builder says Hull No. 1 is equipped with the optional 1,000 hp Caterpillar 12.9 diesel and is burning 1.4 gallons per mile at a 17-knot cruise speed. I did some quick math: Based on the 58’s 1,000-gallon fuel capacity, and considering a 10 percent reserve, ballpark range at cruising speed is 642 nautical miles.

At 20 knots, fuel burn is reportedly 1.75 gpm. If you want to up the fuel efficiency by trading off a little speed, a 650 hp 8.7 Caterpillar diesel is available.

The sense of tradition in the Duffield 58 goes well beyond the yacht’s lines. It also is evident in her interior: Satin-finish cherry wood is standard throughout the vessel. The salon sole is a Lonseal vinyl version of teak and holly, and a real wood sole is optional for purists. Courtesy Duffy

With 47 years in the electric-boat segment, Duffy knew that quietude is also key. The 58 has an enclosed shaft system to minimize vibration throughout the fiberglass hull. Taking the sound dampening a step further, the 1,000 hp diesel is on soft mounts abaft the salon. You should hear only the water running across the hull.

The 58’s look is traditional, but her build is thoroughly 21st century. The hull, topsides and bottom are vacuum-bagged fiberglass with Airex coring. Her stringers, soles and bulkheads are also resin-infused.

The cruising-comfort quotient is not lost on the builder, so the 58 has a three-stateroom, two-head layout. There’s a forepeak master, and abaft to port and starboard are guest staterooms with full-size berths for another couple and the kids.

Duffield is a semicustom yard, but Duffy tells me that at the $2.5 million base price, this yacht is ready to go. So, where to?

Duffield 58
1. You can add a removable bait tank on the swim step. 2. The salon’s soft goods are Ultraleather. Two barrel chairs are standard. 3. Galley countertops are quartz with cherry trim. Corian countertops are also available. 4. A watertight aluminum door with tempered glass, to starboard of the pilothouse helm seat, provides side-deck access. Courtesy Duffy

Design company Duffy London has revealed renderings of a solar-powered cruiser concept built for global, green travel.

At 144 feet LOA, she’ll have plenty of space for solar panels to cover the majority of the top part of the yacht, including the unused space surrounding the flybridge.

Solaris is designed to be as green as possible: Her main sources of energy will come from solar, electric and alcohol power. She will have six engines providing a total of 2,600 hp. Her estimated top hop? 45 knots.

Solaris will reportedly have a cruising speed of 28 knots and a fuel capacity of 2,380 kWh. According to Duffy, with advancing technologies in solar and battery power, it can create more energy with less space — a Moore’s law of sorts.

With this potentially infinite powering technology, Duffy aims to possibly create a superyacht that may never need refueling.

Her estimated build date is 2020.

Accommodations: 10 guests in five cabins.

Price: $ 31,616,875 (£25,000,000.00)

It is important that living in an environmentally friendly way and leaving as small a carbon footprint as possible is not only possible, it can also be luxurious, inspirational and provide a level of freedom and independence that fossil fuels never could.
