The increasing popularity of power catamarans means more boaters are discovering the brand Horizon Power Catamarans, which has been building for this market for 37 years. Its latest model, the PC68, blends sea-kindly performance with a high level of luxury in a strong build.

Horizon Power Catamarans has done a lot to optimize the space that this yacht’s 24-foot-6-inch beam affords. The sheer size felt impressive when I boarded from either hull platform (they flank a high-low hydraulic platform) or via the side gates. The cockpit has a 9-foot-long high-gloss wood table that seats eight guests, with real estate to move around unimpeded. The wet bar here has a Corian countertop, a fridge and an ice maker. There is still plenty of room to get to the curved staircase to port, providing access with grab rails to the flybridge.

The salon is through a 6-foot-wide glass door with a stainless-steel frame. Inside is an average of 7-foot headroom, which feels like walking into an upscale club. To port is a sofa, accented by a custom wood-and-metal coffee table. Across from there is the low-profile, open galley with three stools at a center island for informal dining. The galley has Miele appliances, including a four-burner cooktop, a convection oven and a fridge, along with a dishwasher and a cooling drawer by Fisher & Paykel. Corian countertops wrap around the island for added panache.

Forward is the primary gathering spot, with a deep, soft, L-shaped sofa. It’s surrounded on three sides by windows. A custom coffee table houses dual ottomans. This area can also be set up as an on-deck master stateroom (see sidebar).

Dismiss the thinking that lower staterooms on a multihull yacht are small and constricted. Horizon Power Catamarans performed some design magic and created four spacious dwellings. In the starboard hull, the master stateroom has a private entrance with a walkaround king-size berth athwartships in the peak, giving the owner an exterior view via a frameless hullside window. The master’s en suite head has his-and-hers sinks and a shower stall. A vanity, cabinets and cedar-lined, full-height closets are included.

The en suite VIP stateroom in the port hull has a queen-size berth. Two additional en suite staterooms, each with twin berths, are in either hull.

Horizon Power Catamarans 68
In addition to creating volume to spare, the PC68’s twin-hull design makes for a stable ride on rough days. Courtesy Horizon Power Catamarans

Sizable entertaining space is on the flybridge. Most of this deck is open for rest and relaxation, with the helm to port. Twin Stidd helm seats allow for a companion to assist in navigation or take in the views underway. Three 22-inch Garmin multifunction displays show navigation data, camera feeds, engine specs and more, while individual displays for the MAN diesels are neatly laid out in the dash, along with switches, thruster joysticks and throttle controls. Helm air conditioning is via two outlets.

Two windshields are split by a pass-through electric door. Guests can also enjoy the ride from the forward benchseat to starboard. A filler cushion can be used to make this a lounge-pad area.

Abaft the flybridge helm are a tiered bar, three chairs, Corian countertops, cooler drawers, an ice maker and a wet bar. Across from there is a C-shaped settee for several guests with a fold-out wood table. The seating is a touch higher than I expected, but Horizon builds in a raised footrest to ensure folks are comfortable. The height adds to the visibility.

This space also has a sky lounge option with side windows and an after bulkhead, but the versatility of the open bridge with Sea Crylic curtains for the sides and aft provides the best of both worlds.

Horizon Power Catamarans 68
The PC68’s sizable Portuguese deck creates an al fresco entertainment space with unobstructed views. Courtesy Horizon Power Catamarans

What is really exciting is the PC68’s Portuguese deck. Through the flybridge forward door are two L-shaped settees with high-low tables. Guests can easily transit from the flybridge without having to walk around the boat’s sides. Also, the tables lower and have fill-in cushions that convert them to sun pads and loungers. A portside staircase leads guests to the foredeck with pulpit seats at the bow. All these areas have railings up to 33 inches high, in stainless steel, for safety.

Aft on the flybridge is room for a 17-foot tender with a 1,750-pound-capacity crane. There’s also room for lounge chairs. A grill station is in one corner, and a day head with a shower is in the other.

“I’m very pleased with the way the 68 came out,” Richard Ford, Horizon Power Catamarans founder and CEO, says with a grin, adding that production will never be mass-scale because the company wants to ensure quality control and resale value. “We don’t build a lot of boats. We don’t want to.”

Quality, he adds, promotes reliability—so much so that he gives each owner his personal cell number. The commitment to quality is also evident everywhere on board the Horizon Power Catamarans 68.

On-Deck Master

As an option, the standard salon space forward can be ordered as a full-beam master stateroom with wraparound windows, a centerline king berth and an en suite head in the lower port hull. In this layout, the two twin-bunk guest staterooms belowdecks remain, as does the VIP, which is relocated to starboard.

Power Up

Powered by twin 850 hp MAN i6 diesel engines spinning five-blade Veem props, the PC68 cruises easily at 19.7 knots, burning 52 gallons per hour and offering a range of approximately 644 nautical miles based on the 1,500-gallon fuel capacity. At wide open and 2,400 rpm, this power cat hit 24.8 knots, burning 82 gph with a range of 514 nm. Pull back to 10 knots at 1,200 rpm for a 1,417 nm range at a miserly 12 gph.

Ride On

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the PC68, sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon Power Catamarans uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Horizon’s PC60 packs the utility and amenities of a 100-foot monohull into a 60-foot power catamaran. It can have four staterooms, including a main-deck master; can hold a 14-foot center-console on the upper deck; and can host at least 20 guests for parties. Guests can dine inside at the coffee table that switches to a dining table with an L-shaped settee, in the cockpit with a flybridge overhang or on the bridge deck with a grill. The PC60 can do 23 knots. At 9 knots, range is nearly 1,500 nautical miles. As of May 2023, six PC60s were available, ranging from $1,999,999 to $2,695,000.

From the Archive

“Being a catamaran, the PC60 has a wide beam (nearly 25 feet), and the builder takes advantage of every inch of volume. You can invite 20 friends for a party aboard, and there’s elbowroom to spare, even if you only use the main deck. There’s seating for everyone too. The PC60’s twin-hull design also means exceptional stability, which allows you to have loose chairs, even on the flybridge, without worrying.”

Horizon Power Catamarans will debut its redesigned PC60 at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The updated power cat has a new flybridge, and, depending on configuration, it can come with either three or four staterooms.

Owners can choose between either what Horizon calls an On-Deck Master layout or an Open Salon layout. A PC60 with an On-Deck Master layout will be on display at FLIBS.

Regardless of configuration, though, the updated flybridge is a focal point of the new PC60. There is now a day-head here, in addition to the enclosed, air-conditioned space with an on-centerline helm station, a full bar, U-shaped seating to port with a dinette and enough space aft for a 17-foot tender with a 100 hp engine.

In the On-Deck Master layout, the full-beam master is forward of the salon and galley on the main deck. The galley, with Miele appliances, Scotsman ice-makers, Corian stone options and a bar with four bar stools, is to starboard; to port is L-shaped seating with a dinette. Aft and outside is forward-facing seating and a dining table that can serve six. This layout places another master and a twin-berth stateroom in the portside hull; in the starboard hull, there can be an en suite VIP or a utility room/office.

The Open Salon layout has a galley with an island bar and wraparound lounging real estate that’s forward and beneath semi-panoramic windows. There are three staterooms in this layout, with a VIP and a convertible twin-berth stateroom in the portside hull. The master takes up the entirety of the starboard hull.

What are the power options for the Horizon PC60? Standard power is twin 800 hp MAN i6 engines, and owners can opt for 850 hp engines.

Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.

Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The MY44’s standard powerplants are twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels. Fountaine Pajot

The Fountaine Pajot MY44, a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55

Silent-Yachts takes a holistic approach to boatbuilding. It’s not just about producing more energy. It’s also about using less. Silent Yachts

The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74

Horizon PC74
“The PC74 offers the interior and deck space like a yacht in the 80- to 100-foot range,” Stuart Hegerstrom says. “It’s perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.” Horizon

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

Aquila 36

The Aquila 36 is the first vessel in the builder’s series with outboard power. Aquila Boats

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Our test yacht had 580 hp John Deere N13 diesels turning 32-inch Bruntons five-blade props. Top speed was 20 knots, with a transatlantic range (4,000 nautical miles) at 10 knots from her 2,246-gallon tanks, according to the builder. Nicolas Claris

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60

The PC60 has mid-20-knot speed when you want it, but she can voyage for more than 1,500 nautical miles at a 9-knot cruise. Horizon

To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran, you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Horizon Power Catamaran’s PC74 Offers a Lot Horizon

The  first  thing  to catch my gaze on the PC74 from Horizon Power Catamarans was the high freeboard forward. It sloped aft, gently, via an unbroken sheer line that was curved like a wave. It was the kind of styling that I’m used to seeing on monohull power yachts, not on twin-hull designs. As it turns out, my response was exactly what Stuart Hegerstrom had hoped to achieve. As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, he had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

The result aboard the PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

“The PC74 offers the interior and deck space like a yacht in the 80- to 100-foot range,” Hegerstrom says. “It’s perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.”

The yacht’s 28-foot-4-inch beam allows for numerous gathering places where guests can chill and mingle. On the main deck, unobstructed views from the aft deck to the forward bulkhead add to the wide-open feel. Sliding doors aft disappear into the bulwarks, and side windows enhance all-around views.

In the salon, a leather-upholstered, L-shaped sofa runs along the port side, with swivel barrel chairs and a high-gloss walnut table. Across from there is a two-tiered bar with four bar stools that have footrests — a nice touch. Behind the bar is the galley, with a Sub-Zero fridge, freezer drawers, Electrolux five-burner ceramic cooktop, Miele dishwasher, double Summit wine chillers and more, all concealed behind light-oak cabinetry. The galley’s location amidships keeps it near the aft deck dining and the forward eight-person dining table; on charter, the location lets the chef give cooking lessons for fun.

On the open-bridge version of the PC74, the hardtop is integrated with the arch and forward window frame. Side and aft curtains can enclose the space, providing welcome relief in cold or foul weather. A C-shaped settee is to port with a wood table for alfresco dining with eight guests. To starboard is a bar with five swivel stools — certain to become the favorite place for sundowners. Behind the bar are dual freezers, an ice maker, a fridge, a stainless-steel sink with cover, and a TV. There’s space for a GE Spacemaker dryer in one of the cabinets, an ideal spot for handling wet guest towels. A gas grill is abaft the bridge staircase. Horizon Yachts

The main-deck master is forward with a panoramic view, a centerline king berth, and windows on three sides with electric blinds. Owners can style the area however they like, Hegerstrom says, including adding a private lounge, different fabrics and woods, and more.

Walnut trim, burl inlays in the cabinets, a fabric-covered tray ceiling, a pop-up TV, a vanity, a double sofa with ottoman and recessed lighting were all part of this PC74’s master, which also included an en suite head with a surprisingly sizable shower for a yacht of this length overall (again, the catamaran beam allows for such design choices).

Guest staterooms are down a set of stairs from the main deck forward. Each pontoon’s hull has two staterooms. The forepeak staterooms have king-size berths that face the hullside windows, allowing for ambient lighting as well as commanding views. The after staterooms aboard the PC74 that we toured were set up in two ways: one with single berths and the other with a double plus a single. All were en suite.

Efficiency and performance were part of the PC74’s design brief, with Lavranos Marine Design in New Zealand handling naval architecture. Based on what I experienced in 2- to 3-foot froth-tipped waves, I can say that Lavranos did a solid job on stability. Powered with twin 1,150 hp Caterpillar C18 ACERT diesels and running at 12.4 to 22.4 knots, the PC74 barely registered a jar. There was no heavy fore-aft pitchpoling heading into the seas, and side motion was noticeably less than it would have been aboard a same-size monohull. Tight turns were relatively flat, with no digging of the hulls or lurching. Fuel economy ranged from 35 gph at 12.4 knots to 120 gph at top speed.

While the PC74’s exterior styling was the first thing I noticed, it’s not the only thing I’ll remember following this daylong sea trial. I can only imagine everything owners and charter guests will find to like about this yacht after spending a week or more aboard.

At the Con

The PC74’s flybridge helm accommodates three 22-inch Garmin multifunction displays. Other combinations also work: Caterpillar engine displays, Garmin digital logs, throttle controls, a thruster joystick, a trim-tab indicator and more will fit. Twin Stidd helm chairs, a portside lounge and a starboard-side twin bench seat let the captain mingle with guests.

Hidden Treasure

The PC74 has dedicated stowage for 12 dive tanks and more, with lockers in the forward bows, in-deck aft, at a command station on the cockpit’s starboard-side, in a TV cabinet on the aft deck, and inside a day-head on the flybridge. Side decks about 18 inches wide make transiting fore and aft a breeze. Twin foredeck lounges have a center umbrella to shade everyone from the sun at high noon.
