Amels in the Netherlands has delivered Volpini 2, the first Amels 188. She is being touted as the world’s first Tier III-compliant new yacht as well as the first with Amels Hybrid Power.

Tim Heywood handled exterior design, and Reymond Langton did the interiors. The yacht is 970 gross tons with a 35-foot beam, allowing for what Amels is calling “high ceiling heights.”

The owner’s suite has a folding balcony that’s 130 square feet, and there are six guest staterooms, including a VIP on the bridge deck.

Amels Hybrid Power combines energy sources from engine heat recovery, a battery bank and generators.

“This design is an important milestone for Amels,” Hans Konings, Amels design manager, stated in a press release. “We’re very proud of the technology innovations that have gone into her design, the culmination of our Amels 188 research and development program, which we started in 2014.”

What are Tier III emissions regulations? The International Maritime Organization requires new motoryachts over 500 gross tons with a global cruising area and a keel laid after January 1, 2016, to reduce the nitrogen-oxide emissions in engine exhaust gases by around 70 percent.
