The 53 is the latest edition in Azimut Yachts’ flybridge series, which includes eight models ranging from 50 to 80 feet length overall. This 53 has an exterior design from Alberto Mancini, who also pens the new models in the builder’s express-cruiser S series. Interiors are from Azimut.
At first glance, the yacht’s fine entry, straight sheerline, and expansive use of glass in the hullsides and superstructure give the vessel a visually lower profile, one more akin to an express-style craft than a flybridge yacht. It’s a clever design that creates a sleek aesthetic.
And the performance-oriented appearance is backed up by, well, performance. The Azimut 53 is powered with a pair of twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950 diesels. The builder reports a comfortable cruise speed of 26 knots with a 31-knot top-end speed. Both the upper and lower helms—on the port side and starboard side, respectively—have single-lever controls as well as joystick control for close-quarters maneuvers. And Volvo Penta’s Active Ride Control uses interceptor-style tabs that can help automatically adjust the 53′s running attitude.
The yacht is sized for the owner-operator cruising family. There are three staterooms and two heads, including an amidships master and a forepeak VIP. Abaft the VIP and to starboard is the third stateroom, with side-by-side berths. If desired, there is a crew berth and head all the way aft—although most US owners will likely use this space for extra stowage.
From an entertainment perspective, the yacht has several distinct alfresco zones. The flybridge has crescent-shaped seating around a high-low table abaft the helm. Forward of the helm is a sun pad for a couple or a few guests. Another sun pad is on the foredeck, and the cockpit has a transom bench seat with a table for alfresco meals.
The galley is aft and to port in the salon with direct access to the cockpit, as well as to the salon’s U-shaped seating and dining table. Across is a settee for cocktails and casual conversation within earshot of the lower helm, with salty vistas out the nearly 360 degrees of glass.
From its admirable performance to its use of available real estate—inside and outside—and cruising room for the growing family, the Azimut Yachts 53 makes a good shortlist case for cruisers ready to make a move.
