The Hatteras Yachts M90 Panacera called Jetstream is listed with Atlantic Yacht & Ship for $10.3 million. The 2019 build has an options list that totals more than $2 million. The motor yacht has a four-stateroom, five-head layout that sleeps 10.

This motor yacht can go the distance or go quickly. Captain’s choice. Twin 1,900 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels provide power on Jetstream, giving it a reported 24.7-knot top speed and a 22-knot cruise speed. The engines have just 500 hours on them. This Hatteras M90 Panacera has the performance, but it also has luxury cruising comfort. The salon feels thoroughly modern, thanks in part to the white-oak sole and light-tone furnishings. It has a king-size berth, a 65-inch flat-screen TV, stowage and an en suite head with heated soles. It’s worth noting the king berth in the master stateroom has stowage underneath and is set on electrically powered actuators for easy access.

From the Archive: Hatteras Yachts 80 Motor Yacht

“The 80 is an attractive offering for the discriminating cruising family looking for quality beyond the norm. Though she is large, a small crew can easily handle her. Her 5-foot, 4-inch draft is well suited to Bahamian locales, and her broad beam and ample displacement should prove worthy of more adventurous crossings.

With the optional passerelle, the 80 will be a standout Med-moored beside the Italian entries in her category, both inside and out. Her exterior styling is a departure from Hatteras’ past designs, which relied mightily on Jack Hargrave’s still-popular concept of solidly performing, narrow-beam motoryachts. This new 80-footer is all about beam and the convex hull on which Hatteras Yachts is staking its future.”

“I have never been aboard a Hatteras with anywhere near as much customization as this boat. From the transom livewell to the hydraulically operated tuna tower, this boat has been changed and upgraded dramatically, making an already great ride a really great ride. This project should alert anyone considering the pros and cons of custom versus production that it may just be possible to have a little bit of both.”

Powered with twin 1,800 hp Caterpillar C32 Acert diesels and set up for long range, the GT65 made a 33.3-knot top hop. Thomas Spencer

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina has some design changes from its GT siblings. The flybridge is pushed back a little, in a design nod to earlier Hatteras sport-fish yachts. There are newly designed side windows, and the engine-room side vents are longer. But the GT65 retains the series’ trademarks, such as generous bow flare, seakeeping ability and fish-raising muscle.

The owner of our test boat, Rascal, is a seasoned yachtsman, angler and family man who considered all of these attributes in his purchase. He worked as a mate on fishing boats when he was younger and has always been around boats with his family. Having owned several Hatteras sport-fish yachts, he decided the GT65 Carolina was the next logical move.

Rascal’s captain, Nick Millsap, has worked with the owner for five years and says the GT65 Carolina exceeded expectations. On the initial cruise to meet the owner, Millsap says, the GT65 had “a great dry ride, even into the head seas. It was rough, but the ride was awesome.”

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The GT65 has a 194-square-foot cockpit, and there is room to swivel the combination fighting chair/rocket launcher in any direction on a frenetic marlin. Mezzanine seating to port has air conditioning to keep guests and line watchers cool. A stainless-steel freezer box is under the seat. Beneath the footrests are chilled boxes for refreshments.

To starboard is a tackle center with a prep station and eight drawers. The drawers have stainless-steel bottoms with holes for drainage and ventilation. An electric grill can be installed on top of the unit.

An in-deck ice maker produces not cubes but cylindrical ice, so it lasts longer and can touch more surfaces, keeping the catch fresher. The in-transom livewell can be fitted out with tuna tubes. Teak coaming boards add panache, while the lack of teak in the cockpit eases cleanup and maintenance.

For all its angling focus in the cockpit, the GT65 has yacht-level elegance inside. High-gloss teak is used for the cabinets and furnishings. Complementing the wood are light fabric headliners with teak accents, as well as a vinyl-plank sole for durability. An L-shaped sofa to port is plush and has stowage below each section.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina
The galley cabinets are high-gloss teak, and the salon has a durable vinyl-plank sole. Thomas Spencer

Rascal’s layout has a galley island with two bar stools, a setup that creates multiple ways to move in and around the galley, and that makes more space for several folks to enjoy meals. The standard galley layout is a peninsula form, creating a U-shaped countertop with room for one more bar stool. Either way, the galley has fridge and freezer drawers; a microwave; a four-burner electric cooktop; stowage for pots, pans and dishes; and pantries and cabinets with matching grain. An elevated U-shaped dinette to port has underseat stowage and a teak table.

Belowdecks is a four-stateroom, three-head layout. All spaces have 6-foot-8-inch to 7-foot-1-inch headroom. The amidships en suite stateroom has a queen walk-around berth, nightstands, a full-size closet and drawers. The forward VIP can have a queen-size centerline berth or a 60/40 split berth. The two remaining staterooms have upper and lower berths.

Owners can convert one of the staterooms to a Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage room, with gear cabinets and rig-prepping counter space. For the competing crew, the washer and dryer in the companionway should come in handy during tournament season.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina
A high freeboard and significant bow flare should help keep the GT65 dry on rough days. Thomas Spencer

To minimize maintenance, most all of the high-gloss teak finishes on the exterior can be painted in a faux-teak finish. It looks as close to real as you’ll get, without the need for varnishing.

Sporting a style that blends a little bit of yesterday with a lot of today, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina is built for running to blue water—and is designed to look good doing it.

Hatteras Yachts used the 2020 Miami Yacht Show for the premiere of the GT65 Carolina, a sportfisher with reported top speeds of more than 40 knots.

“I picked an exciting time to join the Hatteras team with the launch of this groundbreaking new yacht,” Gary Smith, Hatteras CEO, stated in a press release. “My second day in the office, I met with Chris Jessen, soon-to-be owner of the first GT65 Carolina along with his wife, Laura. The Jessens, who have an elite tournament fishing team, were great partners with Hatteras in developing this new sportfish model.”

Hatteras used computational fluid dynamics for a new hull and tunnel design on the GT65 Carolina. The hull and stringer system are infused as a single part to reduce weight and increase strength. The boat also has a new engine-room layout.

Standard power is twin 1,622-bhp Caterpillar C32A diesels; options include twin 1,800-bhp and 1,900-bhp Cats. Twin Seakeeper 9 stabilizers add comfort on board.

Four staterooms and three heads are part of the layout. The galley can have an island or peninsula counter. Aft is the cockpit with mezzanine seating, optional air conditioning and fish-ready features.

What’s the name of the first Hatteras GT65 Carolina? She’s called Fish Tank.

It’s been more than a decade since Hatteras Yachts launched its GT line, lending new style to the North Carolina builder’s long-respected ability to construct fishing battlewagons.

Today, the GT range includes open and flybridge models from 45 to 70 feet length overall, with the GT59 being the newest addition to the fleet.

Like her siblings, the GT59 is built to suit serious anglers, with 156 square feet of dance floor where owners can mount a leaning post/rocket launcher combination stand, or an offset fighting chair for chasing Hemingway-worthy marlin. Adding to her fishy nature, there’s an in-transom livewell and a tackle center in the cockpit’s forward starboard corner, under the flybridge ladder and insulated in-deck fish boxes. Teak adds a rich look not only in the cockpit, but also in the coaming boards, and air conditioning vents in the back of the mezzanine seats make watching the trolling action feel, well, ultra cool.

Inside, the Hatteras GT59 has a single-level salon and galley. An L-shaped settee with a coffee table is to port and along the after bulkhead. To starboard is an entertainment unit with a built-in flat-screen TV. The layout allows room for an island galley with four fixed stools, a four-burner Miele electric cooktop, a Franke stainless-steel sink, an in-cabinet Sharp microwave, and four fridge/freezer drawers. High-gloss teak is used throughout the space, which also has a wood-grain vinyl sole and light-tone Silestone countertops—inviting and easy on maintenance.

Fisherman on a Hatteras GT59
The Hatteras GT59’s 156-square-foot cockpit provides room for anglers to move and fight their fish wherever it may run. Courtesy Hatteras Yachts

Belowdecks, Hatteras offers three layouts. The standard one has an en suite master stateroom to port (with 6-foot-5-inch headroom), a forward VIP with a queen berth and a head that also serves as the day head, and a starboard guest stateroom with upper-lower berths. In one optional layout, the forward VIP changes to 60-40 split berths. The third layout adds a day head abaft the starboard guest stateroom, swapping out the space from the standard utility room.

In all the layouts, there is a stand-up rod locker in the companionway. Door frames to the staterooms have rounded headers, adding to the high-end ambience that runs throughout the guest spaces.

Truly hardcore anglers may consider what’s dubbed the optional Hatteras Integrated Tackle Storage space. It converts the standard utility space into a tackle center with custom cabinets and lockers for rods, reels and supplies. In this space on the GT59 that I was aboard, I counted 27 rods (sans reels) in one locker alone. In-counter stowage holds larger reels such as Penn Internationals.

The engine room is designed for owner-operators, and it has one feature in particular that surprised me. When entering via a hatch in the mezzanine seating, I needed to step over the lower bulwark—and at first, I thought this setup was awkward. Soon, I realized that having the bulwark there likely eliminates seawater from entering the engine room, especially when backing down. I have seen decks get absolutely flooded with the amount of water that can wash over the transom, so this is a good idea.

Hatteras GT59 interior
The galley cabinetry is high-gloss teak, and the salon sole is wood-grain vinyl. Countertops are Silestone. Courtesy Hatteras Yachts

Headroom in the engine room is just over 5 feet, and I felt like I would have had plenty of room to move around and complete regular maintenance on the optional 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32A diesel engines (1,600 or 1,800 hp diesels are also available). A 1,200-gallon-per-day watermaker and a second 21.5-kW Onan generator can be added to the standard engine-room machinery. An optional Seakeeper 16 gyrostabilizer should keep the ride comfy.

But much of the GT59’s fun, of course, is to be had topsides. There are two helm setups: one on the flybridge and one in the tuna tower. The flybridge layout has a high-gloss teak pod with single-lever controls on centerline, twin helm seats and 360-degree visibility. The helm’s dash can house three Garmin multifunction displays, in varying sizes. Covered cabinets conceal the trim tabs controller, bow thruster joystick, Optimus rudder angle display and more. Overhead is a drop-down console with the Cat engine display monitor, autopilot, VHF radio and speed log.

Performance? Check. Fishability? Check. Luxury appointments? Check. In the GT59, Hatteras Yachts has built a sport-fisherman with solid speed, admirable range and myriad angling amenities. About the only thing left to do is to fill the fish boxes.

Time Well Spent

Hatteras Yachts says construction time for the GT59 is about eight months. The hull is built of solid fiberglass below the waterline, with a stringer system that is laid in during hull production. Divinycell sandwiched foam coring is used above the waterline. A sharp entry and variable-degree deadrise hull form allow for lift and fuel efficiency. Hull tunnels mean flatter shaft angles and allow for the yacht’s 4-foot-9-inch draft.

Peak Performance

A pair of optional 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32A diesels propelled my test GT59 to 40.1 knots at 2,300 rpm. The engines burned 204 gallons per hour at the yacht’s top hop. Dialed back to 1,800 rpm, she cruised at 29.8 knots while consuming 124 gph. At that speed, the GT59’s range is 379 nautical miles with a 10 percent fuel reserve. Dropping back to 21.8 knots and 1,500 rpm, range extended to 415 nautical miles with a fuel burn of 83 gph.

Yacht designer Ward Setzer, who worked at Hatteras Yachts in the mid-1980s before launching his own firm in 1991, returned to the North Carolina builder as chief product officer in January. Setzer plans to revamp existing Hatteras models and create new ones.

Following are edited excerpts of Setzer’s conversation with Yachting.

Returning to Hatteras is a real homecoming for you. I started with Jack Hargrave right out of school and did big boats with him, and I was there less than two years when I went to Hatteras around 1985 or 1986. Jack was designing the 92 to 130 series for Hatteras, so I ran that program on the production line.

What made you want to give up your own business at age 58 and go back? I was semiretiring in April of this year. I was going to go off and be artsy and live in the North Carolina mountains — I was all ready to do it and continue as a consultant on my terms, which is a nice way to end a custom career — but then I got a call.

That must have been one heck of a call. There’s nothing better than a challenge, especially to help your alma mater. I was here in the glory days when Hatteras had 1,500 employees. It’s almost 500 now. They’re well known for their sportfish, but they don’t sell nearly as many boats as a company like Viking does, and there’s also all these companies like Jarrett Bay digging into the custom market. Hatteras needs a top-to-bottom, long-term vision. Because of my 800 vessels on the water built all over the world, I think it’s going to be fun to give a little bit of what I’ve learned back.

How will you create that vision? I’m on the shop floor problem-solving. I’m here to look at the product, improve the product line through the motoryachts and the sportfish, expand the product line at a much faster frequency than in the past, and rally the team.

Does this mean the end of your firm? Setzer Design is still open for a while, to finish obligations. My one-off and two-off projects, as unique and fun as they are, most of them for the past five or six years, I haven’t been able to show anybody what I’m doing. I have nondisclosure clauses.

What can we expect from Hatteras going forward? We have the motoryacht line and the sportfish line. We’re going to build out those lines, fill in the holes in the strategies to meet each market segment properly. I need to massage every product across the board in different ways so that they all become a family. And then there will be new development from the ground up.

You’ve designed some big yachts. Is there a 250-foot Hatteras in the future? The key is to stay within your boundaries and work within your realm of influence. I’m also going to make sure we look at the history: where this company came from, how it started and where they had the most success with what types of products.

What do you think is most important for boaters to know about the history of Hatteras Yachts? It was on the backs of companies like Hatteras in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s that so many other companies got their start.

Since you can’t divulge upcoming changes in Hatteras models, can you say when we might see them? You’ll start to see things by the Fort Lauderdale show this year.

That’s in November — you mean new features by then, right? Not new models? Noooo — why would I want to do new features when I can do a whole new model? We’re going to be coming with surprises in motoryachts and sportfishers. Our sport-fishing line is going to get even stronger, and with the motoryachts, we are going back to our heritage.
