Cambodian developer Urbanland takes Phnom Penh’s burgeoning urban lifestyle by the reins

As Phnom Penh’s skyline slowly but steadily adds skyscraping condominiums to its traditionally intricate pagoda finials, developers from numerous countries and of various sizes are rushing to grab a piece of the residential landscape pie.

Setting itself apart from the big guns with its focus on providing a more private feel to modern living, local developer Urbanland is making waves with its debut housing estate Embassy Residences and its second condominium project Embassy Central.

Urbanland’s developments have been met with much fanfare, with both developments shortlisted for the Cambodia Property Awards 2016 on 25 February: Embassy Residences for Best Condo Development in Central Phnom Penh, and both developments for Best High-Rise Residential Architectural Design.

“We aspire to create great spaces to accommodate Phnom Penh’s needs, and want to design and craft buildings that inspire people,” said Hok Kang, founder of Hok Kang Architects and Urbanland, and the master deviser behind the capital’s renowned Brown Coffee shops.

By keeping this vision in mind, all of Urbanland’s projects have succeeded in making a name for themselves, propelling the company to become a pioneer in catering to the Cambodian urban lifestyle. As well as prioritising a more intimate and niche modern lifestyle, Embassy Residences and Embassy Central reflect international standards of design and utility of space.

Embassy Central, a 25-storey condominium that houses 119 units, is located right in the heartbeat of the city at Boeung Keng Kang 1, just a stone’s throw from Preah Sihanouk Boulevard – together these two locations offer up some of the city’s best shopping and eating experiences.

Embassy Residences, meanwhile, stretches to 18 storeys comprised of 85 units and is situated at the southern end of Norodom Boulevard, the city’s central thoroughfare. A key feature of the design is an idyllic retreat from the incessant buzz of the city in the form of four sky-gardens – airy and spacious outdoor areas perfect for exercise, meditation, yoga or even a cosy picnic.

Urbanland’s commitment to the Kingdom and its people is unprecedented, and it plans to bring into being many more high-quality projects. Its attention to detail is demonstrated by its immaculate Brown Coffee outlets; its investment in international standards is demonstrated in its residential showrooms.

“Being one of only a handful of Cambodian developers here, we strive and challenge ourselves to elevate the expectations of what a small local team like ours can produce,” said Victor Huot, Urbanland’s marketing manager.
